Overview: Native to the Alismataceae family, Echinodorus Major is a bright green aquatic plant that aquarists can have in their tanks. It is also popular as Ruffle Sword or Radican Sword. Belonging to the Echinodorus genus, the plant readily adapts to different water ambiances. Owing to the large and broad leaves, it is often kept as a midground or background plant. Ruffle Sword gives a lush-green natural look and is perfect for aquascaping. The best thing is that it is a beginner-friendly aquarium plant with easy care and maintenance. Moreover, it offers an additional advantage by helping in water filtration as it absorbs nutrients from the substrate and water column.

Appearance: The long, broad and lanced-shaped leaves are the typical features of plants hailing from Echinodorus species and this is no exception. They are usually bright or medium green colored, growing as large as 50 cm in length and 20 cm in width, depending upon water conditions. The growth form of it is rosette wherein the leaves emerge from the central point. The leaves are smooth with slight textures and pronounced veins.

Hard/soft Plant: Echinodorus Major is considered a moderately hardy plant, thus suitable for all types of aquarists- beginners and experts. It is not a demanding plant and can thrive in minor fluctuations, yet it does require a stable environment. It is ideal for aquascapes looking for a large, robust plant that requires less intensive care than more delicate species.

Ideal water temperature: The suitable temperature range for Echinodorus Major is between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius. This plant prefers tropical conditions and grows best in warm water.

Lighting Condition: Echinodorus Major prefers moderate to high lighting for the best results. While it can survive in low-light conditions, it will grow much slower, and the leaves may become less vibrant or elongated.

Ideal pH Level: The optimum pH range for Echinodorus Major is between 6.5 to 7.5. If the pH is too low (acidic) or too high (alkaline), the plant may experience poor growth. At the same time, its leaves may show signs of stress, such as yellowing or curling.

Other requirements: Echinodorus Major performs the best when it is planted in a nutrient-rich substrate. Substrate rich in gravel will ensure a strong root system. Supplementing root tabs or liquid fertilizers will help. While Echinodorus Major does not require CO2 supplementation to grow, it will benefit from it in aquariums with high light levels. Also, regular trimming will check the excess growth and keep the plant in shape.

Propagation: Echinodorus Major propagates through runners. You can plant them in a new place where overtime they get established and develop roots.

Do You Know: Echinodorus Major plays a helpful role in maintaining water quality in the aquarium by absorbing excess nutrients, particularly nitrates. This can help prevent algae overgrowth and maintain healthier water conditions for other plants and fish in the tank.
