Limnobium laevigatum(Amazon frogbit)

Overview: More popular as Amazon frogbit, Limnobium laevigatum is a native to South America. It is a wonderful decorative plant that floats on the water and makes it aesthetically pleasing. It is considered one of the best plants for open and traditional aquariums. L. laevigatum can be seen growing in the ponds, lakes and slow rivers around Central and South America. Being tolerant of extreme temperatures, it gained popularity as an aquarium plant all around the world and came into cultivation. With the good supply of light and nutrients the plant develops leaves above the water surface and gives aesthetically beautiful view to the tank.

Appearance: The beautiful leaves of L. laevigatum make it a decorative plant for the aquaria. The mature plants may grow up to 50 cm tall therefore regular pruning, and trimming is required. The leaves emerge from the petiole and lie prostrate on the surface of the water. The roots are long and just like leaves can be used as a decorative element in the tank. Roots also endow protection to certain surface fish that love to swirl in the roots of floating plants and hide. New leaves keep on emerging on the surface when good light and nutrients are supplied.

Hard/soft Plant: It is a hard plant that consists of small, round and beautiful green leaves.

Ideal water temperature: The plant grows well under the temperature range of 4 to 35 °C. It can easily tolerate extreme temperature conditions.

Lightening conditions: The light requirements range from medium to high. However, a constant supply will ensure good growth of the plant.

Ideal pH level:  It flourishes well when the pH of the water is between 5 to 7.

Do you know: L. laevigatum is often mistaken with water hyacinth as both of them have similar superficial characters or visuals. The plant is recommendable for breeding tanks.
