Overview: Popular as Yellow Floating Heart among aquarists, Limnocharis flava is a stunning aquarium plant. It is native to Southeast Asia and can be seen growing in shallow and calm water. Often, the aquarists use it as an ornamental aquatic plant due to the vibrant yellow flowers and heart-shaped leaves. The best part is that Limnocharis flava can thrive healthily in tropical and subtropical climates, making it easy to accommodate in the tank in any condition.

Appearance: It is the heart-shaped leaves that make Limnocharis flava aesthetically pleasing. These leaves are greener on top and slightly lighter in shade underneath. The shape of the leaves, as well as the color, bring a striking effect. Usually, they float on the surface of water, forming dense clusters. Regarding flowers, you can also see bright yellow flowers that are cup-shaped. They usually bloom in the summer, adding more ornamental appeal to the tank. The flowers are typically 3-5 cm in diameter and have long and delicate petals. However, they rarely grow underwater. The roots of the plant are slender and long and dangle beneath the water, anchoring it but not growing deeply.

Hard/Soft Plant: Limnocharis flava is considered a soft plant. It is highly adaptable to different aquatic environments and does not require hard water conditions to thrive.

Ideal water temperature: The most suitable water temperature range for Limnocharis flava is between 22 to 30 degrees Celsius. Being a tropical aquatic plant, it prefers warm waters. If you maintain the water temperature to the lower range, especially below 15 degrees, it may struggle to survive.

Lighting condition: Limnocharis flava loves bright but indirect sunlight. Therefore, if you put it in an area that receives full sun for the entire day, it will bloom. However, it can also tolerate partial shade. In low light conditions, its growth might be slower, and flowering may be reduced.

Ideal pH level: Limnocharis flava prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH level, ranging from 6.0 to 7.5. This pH range ensures optimal nutrient uptake and overall health of the plant.

Other requirements: Regarding water hardness, Limnocharis flava prefer moderately hard water. If the water is extremely hard, it will create nutrient imbalance. In addition, it grows best in nutrient-rich waters. At the same time, aquarists need to make sure providing enough space for Limnocharis flava to proliferate. It may need to be pruned regularly to prevent it from overcrowding other plants in the water.

Propagation: One can propagate Limnocharis flava by separating its offsets, which develop from the plant’s runners, and replanting them in the new areas. In this way, the plant spreads across the water surface.

Do You Know: Limnocharis flava is considered as an invasive species in the areas which is not its native. In addition, the dense foliage of this plant makes it a perfect aquarium plant. It offers shade and habitat for fish and invertebrates dwelling in the tank.
