Overview: Native to tropical and sub-tropical Asia, Microcarpaea minima belongs to the Plantaginaceae family. It is also popularly known as the Dwarf Creeping Stiltgrass or Miniature Creeping Stiltgrass. It is a small, low-growing, aquatic, or semi-aquatic plant that is often used in aquascaping. The dense growth habit and attractive appearance make Microcarpaea minima suitable for aquarists.    It is often used to create a lush, carpet-like effect in aquascapes. With its compact, creeping growth, it makes a beautiful addition to the foreground or midground, adding texture and vibrant greenery to the tank.

Appearance: The leaves of Microcarpaea minima are small, round and thick, making a perfect dense and low-lying mat at the bottom of the tank. The leaves are typically bright green and can create a rich, carpet-like texture, making it ideal for covering the substrate of aquariums. The plant is compact, usually growing to about 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) in height, making it suitable for the foreground or midground in the aquarium.

Hard/Soft Plant: It is generally considered a soft plant in terms of care requirements. It's relatively easy to grow as long as the basic conditions are met, such as proper lighting, water parameters, and nutrient availability.

Ideal Water Temperature: The ideal temperature range for Microcarpaea minima is between 20°C to 28°C. It prefers warm and tropical water conditions; therefore, maintaining this temperature range ensures optimal growth and low stress to the plant.

Lighting Conditions: Microcarpaea minima requires moderate to high lighting to grow effectively. In low-light conditions, it may struggle to thrive, fail to spread quickly, and may not achieve its full potential in aquascapes. On the contrary, the plant will form thick, compact mats when it gets sufficient light.

Ideal pH Level: The ideal pH level for Microcarpaea minima is between 6.0 and 7.5.

Other Requirements: Try to maintain water hardness between 4 and 10 dGH as it will help the plant to grow optimally. Regular supplementation of liquid fertilizers containing macro and micronutrients is beneficial. A good supply of nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus, will help it thrive in a planted aquarium.

Propagation: Microcarpaea minima can be propagated by dividing its creeping runners or cutting the plant into small segments and replanting them in the substrate.

Do You Know: Microcarpaea minima is often used in paludariums (wet-dry enclosures), where it can thrive both submerged and with its leaves above the waterline. It's an excellent plant for creating "natural" aquascapes, as its low growth and dense matting mimic the appearance of wetlands or riverbanks in the wild.
